Following is an example procedure to cause the PC sound system to speak the radiation levels, using Windows built-in Text to Speech engine.

In this example we will setup Aw-Radw to display the radiation level every 30 seconds and speak the radiation level every 60 seconds, in the form of micro Sieverts per hour.

(Note it is assumed you know how to use Windows Notepad to create text files).

Step 1: Use Windows Notepad to create a file named SAY.BAT containing just one line of text :

SAY.VBS %1

Save the file to your Aware folder, for example, C:\AWARE\SAY.BAT

Step 2: Use Windows Notepad to create a file named SAY.VBS containing the three lines of text:

set s = CreateObject("SAPI.SpVoice")
s.Speak Wscript.Arguments(0)
s.WaitUntilDone(1000)

Save the file to the same folder where SAY.BAT was saved in Step 1, for example to your Aware folder, C:\AWARE\SAY.VBS

Now to setup Aw-Radw to display data in the form of Micro Sieverts per hour every 30 seconds and speak the level every 60 seconds:

Step 3: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Rad Options” – “TBU (Time Base Unit)” and enter 30 then click the OK button. This will direct Aw-Radw to display the current radiation level once per 30 seconds.

Step 4: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Rad Options” – “RM Calibration Factor” and enter:

10500 for the RM-60
14900 for the RM-70
35400 for the RM-80
96000 for the RM-G90

then click the OK button. This will direct Aw-Radw to convert the data to micro Sieverts per hour, standardized to Cesium 137.

Step 5: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Rad Options” – “Radiation Units Caption” and erase what is there, hit the Micro button then add Sv/hr. then click the OK button.

Step 6: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Alarm Options” – “Points to Average for Alarm” and enter 2 then click the OK button. This will direct Aw-Radw to maintain a two point internal running average which, given the 30 second TBU entered in Step 1 above, will be a sixty second running average.

Step 7: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Output Options” – “ASCII Text File Options” – “ASCII Value Precision” and enter four then click OK button. This will direct Aw-Radw to store (and speak) radiation values with four digits to the right of the decimal point.

Step 8: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Output Options” – “More Screen Window Options” – “Screen Value Precision” and enter four then click OK button. This will direct Aw-Radw to display the values on the main window, with four digits to the right of the decimal point.

Step 9: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Output Options” – “Trigger a Program Every X Points” – “Choose Trigger Program” and in the “File Name” box enter C:\AWARE\SAY.BAT (the file created in Step 1 above) then click Open button.

Step 10: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Output Options” – “Trigger a Program Every X Points” – “Command Line Argument for Trigger Program” and enter "% micro sieverts per hour". Include the quote symbol “ at the beginning and end of the line, as shown. This will cause Aw-Radw to trigger the SAY.BAT file with the given argument wherein the % character will be replaced by the current running average, with a running average depth as entered in Step 6.

Step 11: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Output Options” – “Trigger a Program Every X Points” – “Choose # of Points per Trigger” and enter 2. This will direct Aw-Radw to trigger the SAY.BAT file once per 60 seconds (2 x the TBU entered in Step 3, i.e. 2 x 30 seconds = 60 seconds).

Step 12: Click Aw-Radw menu item “Output Options” – “Trigger a Program Every X Points” – “Trigger Program Yes-No” and click to check “Trigger Program Hidden”. This will direct Aw-Radw to trigger the SAY.BAT batch file in a hidden window. (One could optionally check “Yes Trigger Program” or “Trigger Program Minimized” instead of “Trigger Program Hidden”).

That’s it. Now start collecting radiation data (see Aw-Radw’s help file) and every sixty seconds the program will speak the radiation level. Note one need only carry out the above setup instructions once. Aw-Radw will remember them between sessions.

One can also use Aw-Radw's menu item "Alarm Options" - "Choose Alarm Program" and "Command Line Argument for Alarm Program" to cause the PC's sound system to speak an alarm message (as-well-as send e-mails, dial cellphones etc.) with high and/or low alarm condition.

Notes about Windows built-in Text to Speech: To change the voice, click Windows “Start” button, “Control Panel”, “Sounds Speech and Audio Devices”,” Speech”, “Text to Speech” , “Voice Selection” and choose one of the voices.
